Our teachers
We are proud to have a professional and dedicated teaching team of many different nationalities. Our teachers all hold the CELTA, Trinity TESOL, or ELT Methodology teaching certificate. The native English teachers have been trained at various reputable schools throughout Europe and our Czech teachers are Masaryk University graduates with a focus on English studies. The school’s greatest benefit is that the native teachers have an opportunity to share ideas and experience with the Czech teachers and vice versa.
Our aim for the International House (IH) teachers is to have them both enjoy their work and grow professionally in their teaching awareness and experiences. In addition to organizing an induction week and guiding teachers in their daily work as needed, we prepare weekly professional development seminars for the teachers. The seminar topics are chosen by reflecting on the needs of the teaching team. Through various teacher teambuilding activities, the students benefit from a positive and motivating learning environment. It is rewarding to see the teachers’ growth and gives us the inspiration and drive to come up with new visions for the school.
If you are interested in joining our teaching team, please fill out the website application and/or send us your Curriculum Vitae. If you are thinking about joining our school as a student, give International House Brno a try. Our dedicated and fun teaching staff will help make your English lessons a positive experience.
![]() | Charles fell in love with the Czech Republic when he did his CELTA at Akcent IH in Prague, and has stayed for the friendly people and the beer ever since. Before that he was a successful entrepreneur, having owned and run a number of businesses including a delicatessen, a shoe shop and a Bed and Breakfast the UK. Originally from Lymington in Hampshire, southern England, he occasionally still longs for the taste of English cheese and bacon...! |
![]() | Hana has been teaching at ILC International House Brno since 2007. Prior to her English teaching career, she worked in tourism in Greece and she still misses the climate, the sea and the coffee. Hana holds a university degree in English and Modern Greek. She did her CELTA in 2008, the same year she took the CPE exam. In 2010 she did the IH young learners course and has been teaching more YL classes since then. In her free time she enjoys travelling, cinema and socializing. She has recently been trained to be a Cambridge examiner. One thing that annoys her is the fact that water taps in the UK are not one unit, therefore she now calls it 'the United Kingdom of Divided Water Taps'! |
![]() | Šarka is heavily involved in our Young Learners' programme. She received her CELTA through Masaryk University, as well as a Masters' degree in teaching. She spent a number of years living in the USA, as well as having been to places as diverse as Italy and Japan. Before teaching English, she taught piano and music theory to kids; she has also spent the last few summers in England teaching at summer schools. She exists almost exclusively on a diet of chocolate, coffee and bananas. |
![]() | Pavla is one of our Senior Teachers. She has been with ILC International House Brno since 2000. She also works as a Cambridge oral examiner for both general English exams (KET, PET, FCE, and CAE) and business English exams (BEC Vantage and BEC Higher). She did her CELTA and ELT Methodology training at Masaryk University in Brno. Pavla has a special interest in teacher training and the impact of methodology courses on teachers working in the Czech Republic. Pavla enjoys big challenges of all kinds. She has climbed several 4000 meter mountains in Russia, Peru, Italy, Spain, and Austria. Pavla’s other interests include contemporary linguistics, Afro-American literature, African and Cuban music, hiking, skiing, and travelling. One of the countries she would definitely like to visit again is Jamaica |
![]() | David - originally from Coventry, England – studied German Translation, and has been at IH Brno for six years. He did his CELTA in Berlin before moving to IH Moscow for a year. His hobbies include music (playing it, writing it, listening to it) and football (Coventry City in England or Zbrojovka Brno here). After spending New Year's Eve 2004 in a Russian jail cell (a misunderstanding involving a Metro pass, champagne and some seriously annoyed policemen!) he decided that Brno was probably a lot safer than Russia and has been here ever since. |
![]() | A proud Scot, originally from Ayrshire, Lily-Anne has been at IH Brno for six years, and in that time people have learnt not to call her English. She did her CELTA at IH Budapest and has spent time teaching in this part of the world (IH Katowice) and further afield (China!). As well as teaching, she's worked as a bar manager in both Scotland and China – two very different challenges indeed! She specialises in teaching Business English, and is a qualified Business English teacher trainer. Her hobbies are zumba, Glasgow Rangers, cooking and breaking various bones. |
![]() | From Southend in Essex, Mat moved to Brno in 2003 for a year, before relocating to IH San Sebastian for a couple of years. Realising he missed the place however, he eventually returned and has never regretted it. An athlete in his spare time (which he doesn't have much of after the birth of his son!), he enjoys running marathons and competing in Iron Man events. |
![]() | This is Jack's first teaching job after having done his CELTA in London, his home town. He has a degree in Philosophy from Nottingham University, but after graduating, he discovered 'philosopher' was not a real job and has never quite recovered from the shock. He visited the Czech Republic as a teenager and promised to return one day, so here he is. His hobbies include music and hockey... the one on grass, unfortunately! |
![]() | Stanka is from Uherský Brod, and, strangely, Šarka Cox's mother was her first primary school teacher! She studied at the Faculty of Arts at Masaryk University, gaining a degree in Czech and English Philology, as well as pedagogical training. In the past she's worked as an au-pair spending 2 years in England and one in the USA. She says that Galway in Ireland is her favourite place in the world. In her spare time she likes dancing and flower arranging! |
![]() | Radka has a Masters' degree in education from Masaryk University. She spent a year working and studying in Australia, before working for a number of linguistic agencies and finally settling on IH Brno. She spends her free time (if you can call it that!) with her son, or reading, cooking and hiking, among other things. |
![]() | Markéta has been teaching English for over ten years and holds the ELT certificate from Masaryk University. She chose to join the International House Brno team because of its friendly atmosphere, helpful colleagues, and further professional development. Outside of the classroom, she admits she has a strong sweet tooth, with a special craving for strawberries with cream and sugar, cakes, biscuits, etc. In true Czech style, she can also be found hiking in the mountains, swimming in the sea, sunbathing, and relaxing on the beach in her free time. |
![]() | Soňa is originally from Hněvošice and studied English Linguistics at Masaryk University. She's well-travelled – the UK, France, Germany, Austria, Poland and Hungary have already been ticked off the list. She says she'd like to work abroad one day, but loves the Czech Republic for the castles, the countryside, the history and, of course, the beer! In addition to all this, her hobbies include music and reading about history. |
![]() | Theo is from north London originally, and before moving to Brno to work for International House he spent a couple of years working in Hradec Králové and Nový Jičín. Having tired of small-town life, he decided Brno was the place to be. He's travelled to places such as France and Turkey, and his hobbies include reading about science, sort-of following Arsenal, and his girlfriend. |
![]() | Eva is from Brno, and this is her fifth year at IH Brno, where her responsibilities include preparing students for both Cambridge English exams and the new state Maturita exam. She studied ELT Methodology at Masaryk University and then spent some time teaching in the Czech secondary schools. Eva was attracted to IH Brno for its good reputation, its communicative methodology, its focus on teacher development and its friendly staff. She's looking forward to teaching motivated and open-minded students. She's travelled to England, Italy, Ukraine, Serbia and Croatia. Her long-term goals are to enjoy life and teaching and to stay optimistic. She loves to read, swim, dance, do Zumba, and listen to music. Like many teachers, she is addicted to coffee. |
![]() | Zdenek comes from Brno and has been teaching English ever since 2004 He studied English at MU in Brno. He's joined the IH staff because of its support for teachers and its friendly students. He specializes on lower level adults with a few higher level exceptions. Zdenek really enjoys etymology, which has proved to be quite helpful while teaching vocabulary. His main hobbies are cooking (yes, really!), military, history, reading, survival and - last but not least - dynamic shooting (which he hopes will never be useful while teaching English). |
![]() | Markéta is from České Budějovice, although she's been in Brno for a few years now, and she loves it. She is CELTA qualified and enjoys teaching business English as well as being actively involved in IH Brno's YL programme. She spent a year studying and teaching human ecology in the USA. She loves travelling and photography. |
![]() | Anthony is our resident Aussie, form Melbourne. He's been in Brno for six years now, having previously worked for IH in Moscow. He's big into sports, having been a very promising youth-level swimmer back in Australia; Formula One and cricket are high on the list of 'likes' too, and he's currently trying his hand at taekwondo. He studied International Relations in Melbourne and has travelled to such places as Estonia and Singapore. |
